Introduction to: Skittles
Skittles comes to Outlook this year and is a name you should definitely look out for. The Manchester MC appeared with a bang when he featured on Camo & Krooked’s The Lesson. It has provided a strong platform for the solo release of Dot2Dot which, despite it’s more modest production, just blew me away, making Stamp The Wax’s Top 50 Tracks of 2011 and their recent mix of favourite UK Hip-hop artists.
His lyrics of biting social commentary are delivered with pinpoint accuracy, but the self-proclaimed Mancunian Caesar (“…footprint leaver, bit of a diva”) also brings a playfulness and sense of dark humour to the table. The home-made beat harks back to children’s television theme songs and in the video, the jewel-encrusted Skittles ironically raps about Manchester’s poverty, violence and drug culture. Dot2Dot will star on his forthcoming debut album Poor in £100 Trainers. No surprises with the tongue-in-cheek tone of the title and it surely lays down the gauntlet that more of the same is to come from this exciting new talent.
Word has it that this guy puts on a pretty mean live show, so don’t say you weren’t warned if you’re foolish enough to miss him come the summer.
